Phylum Nematoda
The phyla Nematoda consists of Roundworms. They are mostly free-living, they inhibit the soil, salt flats, and aquatic regions. They spread from polar to tropic regions. Some roundworms are parasitic. They are unsegmented and have a pseudocoelom (a false coelom).
Roundworms have a body cavity between the endoderm and mesoderm tissues. It has two openings; a mouth and an anus.
These animals are predators and can use their mouth and spine to catch and eat small prey. Some soil and aquatic dwellers eat algae, fungi, and decaying organic matter. Diffusion carries nutrients through the body.
Roundworms exchange gases and excrete waste through anus. They have no internal transport system.
These worms have simple nervous systems consisting of several ganglia. Nerves extend from ganglia in the head and run the length of their body. They can transmit sensory information and control muscles. Some of the sense organs can detect chemicals given off by prey or their hosts.
They move using muscles that extend to the length of their body. With fluid in the pseudocoelom, the muscles function as a hydrostatic skeleton. The aquatic worms move like snakes in the water. Soil-dwellers push through the dirt by thrashing around.
Animals such as these types of worms can reproduce sexually. They have seperate sexes and can reproduce internally.
Roundworms can cause life-threatening diseases. Trichinosis-Causing Worms live and mate in the host's intestines. The females carrying the larvae burrow into the intestinal wall and release the larvae inside, which then travel through the blood stream, burrow into organs and tissues, and create cysts. You can obtain this disease by eating raw and uncooked pork. Filarial worms have thread-like bodies and live in the blood and lymph vessels of birds and mammals. They transmit from one primary host to another through bites and open wounds. They can block the passage of fluid in lymph vessels and cause Elephantitis. Ascarids inhabit vertebrate animals They can cause malnutrition and is spread by eating unwashed foods like vegetables. The last disease-causing worm is the Hookworm. It uses a sharp, tooth-like hooks that burrow into the skin and bloodstream. It causes weakness and poor growth.
